A major international cannabis and hemp company is setting up shop in Westwold and tonight people there will get a chance to meet the new neighbours.
Aurora Cannabis Chief Corporate Officer Cam Battley says the Westwold facility will experiment with, and test, cannabis genetics and cultivation procedures.
“We are on about 400 acres of land, which we have purchased. We are making an investment of between five and ten million dollars in the next couple of years. We are looking at employing about 20 to 25 people in the first year. Tonight we are having a community engagement night so that we can get to meet the neighbours and let them know who we are, how we operate, and hear from them.”
He adds the company will be looking to hire locally to fill the needed positions.
Battley says the Westwold facility will advance the science and develop best practices for outdoor cannabis and hemp cultivation.
He says what is learned there will be applied in state of the art facilities Aurora operates or is building in Alberta, South America, and Denmark.
